TUESDAY FORUM
Close Listening: Music in the Humanities Classroom
What becomes possible when we approach music as an aural text, something that can be read and put into conversation with other texts like poems or novels? This workshop introduces participants to a range of prompts and classroom activities that are intended to cultivate close listening as an analogue to close reading. We will see how recorded music can be quoted, paraphrased, translated, and cited as we use a range of IWT practices to explore its multiple layers of meaning. The workshop will center on how Gustav Holst’s orchestral suite The Planets (1917) can be “read” alongside Edith Hamilton’s classic retelling of Ancient Greek myths, illustrating how writing can be used to uncover connections between music and text.
