The Bard College Language & Thinking Program
The Bard College Language & Thinking Program, founded in 1981, is an intensive introduction to the liberal arts and sciences with a particular focus on writing. It is attended by all incoming Bard students during the last three weeks of August. Students read extensively, work on a variety of projects in writing and other formats, and meet throughout the day in small groups and in one-on-one conferences with faculty. The work aims to cultivate habits of thoughtful reading, clear articulation, accurate self-critique, and productive collaboration.
The Language and Thinking Program’s emphasis on collaboration, active learning, experimentation, playfulness, and inquiry has become the hallmark of the Bard College Institute for Writing & Thinking’s workshops, both domestically and internationally.
The Young Writers Workshop
Bard College at Simon’s Rock
Great Barrington, Massachusetts
The Young Writers Workshop is a residential, highly imaginative and collaborative creative writing program modeled on the Language and Thinking Program that Bard College requires of all entering students. This workshop is intended for intellectually curious, motivated high school students in grades 9–12 who like to write and want to develop greater fluency and confidence in their writing. Students will have the opportunity to write in a range of fiction and nonfiction forms, including poems, narratives, and essays, and to strengthen their writing and thinking skills. The Young Writers Workshop will present several online workshops in 2024–25. These will include a short workshop on how to write (and enjoy writing) a college application essay, an online version of the summer workshop, and others.
